A “Charmed” Exile: An informal discussion of the Jewish Community in Kaifeng, China

For nearly one-thousand years, there was a Jewish settlement in the city of Kaifeng, in central China. The Kaifeng Jews created a vibrant and long-lasting community in unique Jewish circumstances. I will present the history of this community, with the hope that as we discuss the Jews of Kaifeng and their challenges as both Chinese and Jewish people, we will have a greater understanding of the challenges we face as both American and Jewish.
