Social Action

We currently have a number of SOCIAL ACTION GROUPS that offer many opportunities for engagement. For more information about any group, email info@tikkunvor.org.

Tikkun V’Or’s ACTION AGAINST HUNGER WORKGROUP works with and supports local and regional organizations that help anyone experiencing food insecurity.   Every month TVO volunteers make lunches to be delivered to St John’s Community Services for people experiencing homelessness. TVO also  works regularly with the Ithaca Kitchen Cupboard to staff the pantry in downtown Ithaca for 2-3 hours each month.

In addition, we periodically ask for food donations for the local food pantries or afterschool programs. During Yom Kippur, we ask for non-perishable snacks for the GIAC or Southside after school programs.  We also encourage donations from dinner, onegs, and parties. Clean food is welcome at St John’s Services at 618 W. State St.  Open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. seven days a week. Phone 607-354-8990.

The CLIMATE JUSTICE INITIATIVE  is working on reducing Tikkun v’Or’s carbon-footprint.  Based on this, we made changes to our heating and cooling systems that aim to reduce our contribution to climate change. We encourage composting and using re-usable dishes and flatware at all TVO events. We recently installed an energy-efficient dishwasher.  The CJI members share upcoming events and current news on the TvO list serv  and work to make most efficient use of our financial resources to reduce our contribution to climate change.

SUPPORT FOR REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS. Many TVO members are actively involved with local groups which support new refugees and immigrants in Ithaca. We are happy to partner with Ithaca Welcomes Refugees and Ithaca Sanctuary Alliance to support individuals and families.

Through education and discussion, the ISRAEL-PALESTINE SOCIAL JUSTICE WORKGROUP strives to deepen our community’s understanding of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict by providing a space for rich discussion about strategies for social justice in the Middle East. Working for social justice is a core Jewish value, directly called for in Jewish text, and seen throughout Jewish history. The call for social justice has a rightful place in a Jewish spiritual community. Such work can and must include speaking out against the oppression of all peoples. To that end. the Israel-Palestine Social Justice Workgroup organizes and supports educational events about the Middle East conflict for members of the temple and broader community.
