DESCRIPTION:What is Israel in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh)? presented by Laure
 n Monroe\n\nIn this session\, we will look at an array of biblical texts e
 ach of which expresses a different set of ideas about what Israel is. We w
 ill explore the tensions and complexities of biblical definitions and cons
 ider how these resonate against modern conceptions of what it means to be 
 Israel.\n\nLauren Monroe is Associate Professor in the Near Eastern Studie
 s department at Cornell University. She received her PhD in Bible and Anci
 ent Near East from the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at
  New York University. Her teaching interests include Hebrew Bible and Bibl
 ical Hebrew at all levels\, Syro-Palestinian Archaeology\, and Ancient Isr
 aelite Religious and Social History. She is particularly interested in the
  way what it meant to be Israel changed over time\, and how such changes a
 re reflected in the stratigraphy of the biblical text and the archaeologic
