The Social Action Committee of Congregation Tikkun v'Or, in the spirit of our respectful sharing of feelings about Israel in our Listening Circles, is sending the following letter to the rabbinic leadership of URJ (Union of Reform Judaism - the national leadership of the Reform movement).
We encourage congregants to read the text of the article from the Tikkun magazine website about the vandalism at Rabbi Lerner's home.
We (as members of the Social Action Committee of Congregation Tikkun v'Or) are deeply saddened and disturbed at the news of the politically motivated vandalism at the home of Rabbi Michael Lerner in California. We call upon rabbinic leadership of the Reform movement to make a public statement in support of the rights of all of us (rabbis, Jews, human beings) to be secure in our homes, regardless of our political views.
We further call upon rabbinic leadership nationwide to make clear that vandalism and threatening behavior is in no way beneficial to Israel, Israel's security, or the Jewish people.
Because of the content of the messages pasted on Rabbi Lerner's home, we can't dismiss this act as merely the misguided crime of some thugs. The fears and anger and disparate strong feelings stirred by ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians need to be expressed in civil and respectful ways. We need to guarantee the safety of our fellow Jews, and rabbis. This is a time to stand together for decency, respect, and lawful behavior.

TvO in the Ithaca Festival Parade
Congregation Tikkun v'Or (Ithaca Reform Temple) members marched in the Ithaca Festival Parade on Thursday, May 28, 2009.
The Festival theme was "Let The Sunshine In;" the theme of our walk was "The Sunshine After the Rain," to honor the work done alongside Love Knows No Bounds to rebuild in New Orleans. We walked with Pastor Jerry and Norma Darby and Pastor Bruce and Deborah Davenport from the 7th Ward.
